It is said that in order to be a great champion in football, you must know how to lose. Wayne Rooney won everything imaginable during his time at Manchester United, but he also saw the flip side of the coin numerous times too.
One of the teams that scorned the English striker the most was FC Barcelona, which prevented him from European glory twice in three seasons, when United experienced one of the richer points of its great history.
Now, the player, still going in the MLS, has had some poignant words for that super team, which won two Champions League titles in three years, and made the semi-finals in two other seasons.
"If those matches had been against any other team than Barcelona, we would of hoped to have won them", Rooney began in 'The Sun', in regards to the finals in Rome and London.
"For me, that Barcelona side is the best team in history and Leo Messi is the best player", he continued, something he can still appreciate years later. "What he does is incredible, he does a little bit of everything, he scores goals, he is a pure midfielder... and he is able to score from where the rest of us can only dream", he insisted in relation to the Argentine, who he placed above his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
