If anyone was betting on the first half of the game being entertaining, they got more than they bet on. Nobody was betting on the sudden outburst from Pep Guardiola which earned him nothing but a yellow card and the title of only Premier League manager to have been shown the yellow card on the field. The Sunday’s Community Shield game began as all would expect, an exciting buzz in the air and players high in competition to win the match. However, the game took a turn when Pep Guardiola was observed animatedly arguing about a play to which he was reprimanded with a yellow card.
In soccer, a yellow card is shown to players as a disciplinary measure to warn these players to better behave on the field. It takes 4 yellow cards before a manager is banned from the touchline in for the duration of the match. Naturally the showing of the yellow card took spectators by surprise when Guardiola’s passionate outburst caught the attention of the camera as well as the referee.
Pep Guardiola proved his passion for a win in hostile display of legs and arms which all took place in front of fourth official Stuart Atwell in just under 41 minutes into the game. Martin Atkinson was the referee to have caused all the commotion and fans were well amused which has become the highlight of the first Sunday of August. What set off the Manchester City boss was a challenge from Joe Gomez which left David Silva in the dirt cradling his injured ankle. The Spanish blooded manager showed his temper by very graphically displaying his disapproval of the incident which was not appreciated by the ref who then took to penalizing Guardiola with a yellow card.
The Premier League is one of the most anticipated seasons in soccer and all games are closely dissected. Needless to say, every event of each match makes it into an international headline and Pep has just kicked off the season with one of the most amusingly entertaining headlines. Although no one can be sure how the Manchester City manager truly feels about being on the receiving of the yellow card.
The rules of the FA Cup, Caraboa Cup, Football League, National League and EFL Trophy adjusted in 2018 to maintain orderly conduct from the managers of the teams on the field. It was then that cards for conduct were implemented into the system so the whole concept is new for mangers, unlike the players on the field to receive yellow and red cards.
Pep Guardiola is one of the highest paid coaches in the history of soccer and this kind of media attention only boosts his popularity. Some might even say, the trend is bound to set in amongst many other managers this Premier League.
