Dimitri Payet's anticipated return to Marseille from West Ham may be off, as both clubs have failed to reach an agreement over a deal for the player, according to 'Sky Sports'.

The West Ham playmaker has expressed a desire to leave the club in the January transfer window, citing personal reasons for his decision, but the midfielder may have to stay at the London Stadium if reports in the United Kingdom are correct.

According to the cited media source, West Ham officials have not been able to agree a fee with Marseille president, Jacques-Henri Eyraud, for the France international.

It is thought that Marseille are the only club interested in signing Payet this transfer window, which therefore means that the 28-year-old may be made to stay put if the two teams have failed to come to an agreement.

Marseille reportedly bid £20m for the player, but West Ham want at least £30m for the Frenchman, a price which the French club are not willing to pay for the player they sold for around £10.7 million in the summer of 2015.

Payet is currently training with West Ham's U-23 side away from the first-team squad and would most likely have to apologise if he were to want to continue playing for the Hammers.

However, Payet is now in a difficult situation as West Ham fans angrily chanted for the club to sell the wantaway midfielder in their 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend.
