Jurgen Klopp was quoted after the game as saying it was "probably a really bad inury" and the club have now confirmed that he has suffered a cruciate ligament damage.
Oxlade-Chamberlain will now miss the end of Liverpool's campaign and the World Cup, facing a race to be fit in time for next season.
His season is "over for both club and country due to a knee ligament injury sustained against AS Roma on Tuesday evening," Liverpool said in a statement.
"The 24-year-old was assessed by the club’s medical team at Melwood on Wednesday morning and no specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage."
It comes as a huge blow for both the player and his teams, as he looked to become an integral part of Liverpool's and England's setup in the coming weeks.
