Everything seems to indicate that Timo Werner will finally make his way to Chelsea, despite Liverpool's links with the German and Jurgen Klopp's interest. Owen has tried to justify his former team's decision in this regard.
Questioned by his figures (92 goals in 155 matches), Owen praised him. "These are very good numbers, aren't they? And you can't say that you're playing in a minor league, the Bundesliga is a very strong competition and you could say that you can bring that here, because you also do it at international level," he said in a Premier League interview.
For the former England player, Timo Werner reminds him of Fernando Torres. "I've been following him closely since he came back and he's scored goals again, he's very quick, he can break easily and he measures his runs brilliantly. He's also very direct, going straight for the goal like Fernando Torres used to do," explained Owen.
"I don't think he plays exactly like him, because I've always had the feeling that Torres would make that first touch and then run forward. I really liked him," he continued.
"I'm sure Liverpool wanted Werner, but the financial implications of his transfer and the times we're going through forced LIverpool out of the bidding - although I'm pretty sure they wanted him there," he said afterwards.
For Owen, Liverpool's planning has played against Werner. "That's the problem, Liverpool gave Origi a long-term contract not too long ago, and they've reasserted him in his background role in case there's a problem. Klopp would have loved him for sure but I think Chelsea needs him more," he said, concluding.
