Onana dropped from Man United squad to face Newcastle

Andre Onana has played in all of Manchester United’s 69 Premier League matches since joining from Inter in the summer of 2023, but will not feature against Newcastle United after being left out by Ruben Amorim.
The 29-year-old Cameroon goalkeeper has been omitted from the squad for the trip to St James' Park to allow him to "rest and disconnect" after his dismal performance against Olympique Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals.
Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals in his side's 2-2 draw in the first leg in France on Thursday - a day after he had been called "one of the worst goalkeepers" in Man United's history by former Red Devils player Nemanja Matic.
The former Inter Milan shot-stopper made a weak effort to save Thiago Almada's free-kick to give the hosts the lead, and then gifted another deep into stoppage time, allowing Rayan Cherki to equalise with the last touch of the match.
As a result, second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is set to be handed his Premier League debut against the Magpies, although it is understood that Onana is likely to return to selection for Thursday’s return leg against Lyon at Old Trafford.
Since the start of last term, Onana has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions, the most of any keeper playing for a club in England's top tier. Nevertheless, Amorim defended his player after his display at Lyon, insisting that the whole team is 'suffering'.
Man United find themselves 13th in the Premier League standings ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Toon, who are seventh in the table and just four points behind fourth-place Manchester City, who have played two games more after their win against Palace.
