Thiago Silva will be a Chelsea player for at least one more season - it's official. The Blues posted on their website that, after the Champions League final, the directive made the decision to activate a clause in his contract that would extend his stay until June 2022. He will turn 37 in London.
"Following the Champions League final, Chelsea Football Club has exercised an option to extend Thiago Silva’s contract by one year, taking his time at Stamford Bridge into a second season", the club's written statement declared. The Chelsea fans certainly took well to the news, having seen what the Brazilian brings to the side this season.
Manager Thomas Tuchel was the main beneficiary of his inclusion. The two were together at a PSG where they were then both forced out, following the club's decision that they were both surplus to requirements in their battle for the European crown. Interestingly, the two then tasted UCL success in the blue of Chelsea, not PSG.
It is expected that Tuchel has plans for Thiago Silva to play an important role in his side next season. Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia gave her words on the Brazilian's renewal: "We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year."
