OFFICIAL: San Siro stripped of hosting 2027 Champions League final

The iconic San Siro, home ground of both Inter and Milan, was set to host the 2027 Champions League final, however, UEFA have now announced the stadium has been stripped of hosting the European final. 

The UEFA Executive Committee initially suspended the final verdict, giving time to the Italian Football federation to submit further information on the stadium's renovation plans. However, with no concrete plan whatsover, UEFA were forced to react,

In an official statement, the body reads: “As the Municipality of Milan could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and the surrounding areas would not be affected by renovation works during the time of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to award the final to Milan and to reopen the bid process to nominate a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025.”

This would have been the first time the stadium, also known as the Giuseppe Meazza, hosted a Champions League final since 2016, when Real Madrid defeated rivals Atletico on penalties. UEFA will now assess potential venues and reassuring that a decision will be announced in the summer. 

The future of San Siro, on the other hand, has been a big question mark in recent months, as refurbishment plans have been rejected from both Milan clubs, who want to, instead, completely rebuild in the surrounding area.
