Machin stepped down last month to take the helm at Sevilla,after guiding Girona to a 10th-place finish during their maiden top-flight campaign.
Former Barcelona and Spain star Sacristan will now take over the role, the club announced on Thurday.
Sacristan enjoyed a glittering playing career that saw him win four La Liga titles and a European Cup and he will now be hoping to put that experience to good use at the Estadi Montilivi
The 54-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Catalan outfit.
Sacristan has been out of work since being sacked by Real Sociedad in March after three years in the job.
