Rafael Benitez has been dismissed as Everton manager, the club have confirmed.
The news comes less than 24 hours after Everton were beaten 2-1 at Norwich in a game which saw one supporter try and confront Benitez.
The Spaniard joined the club in the summer, but he has been unpopular with some ever since his arrival. His well known Liverpool past did not go down well with some while poor results on the pitch meant that Benitez has been under fire for several weeks.
"Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager. Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect. An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course," the very brief Everton statement read. It is eyecatching that the club did not even thank the manager for his services, something which is commonly done by football clubs when they dismiss a manager.
Everton have won just five games out of 19 and are 16th on 19 points. Their next match is on Saturday at home to Aston Villa at 13:30 CET.
