OFFICIAL: Chelsea confirm Kovacic capture
The Croatian playmaker joins the club as a makeweight in the deal that took Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to the Spanish capital.
Classy on the ball and an excellent dribbler, Kovacic promises to be the perfect midfield addition for Maurizio Sarri, with the Linz-born schemer's arrival also clearing the way for Tiemoue Bakayoko to join AC Milan on loan.
Kovacic made five appearances for his country as they reached the World Cup final in Russia and revealed after the tournament that he was keen on a move away from Real Madrid to secure more regular football.
The 24-year-old started just 10 LaLiga games for the European champions last season and he says he is already looking forward to life at Stamford Bridge.
"I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling," he told the club's official website.
"I will try to do my best for this club. It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season."
Kovacic enjoyed a strong football upbringing, having come through the famed Dinamo Zagreb academy.
A goal on his senior debut made him the youngest ever goalscorer in the Croatian top flight, with his rapid progession quicklly securing a move to Inter.
A Young Player of the Year award followed, with his performances in Serie A and the Champions League earning him a move to the Spanish giants shortly after his 21st birthday.
However, the midfield axis of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro has limited Kovacic's game time at the Bernabeu, meaning the 46-cap star is keen to make up for lost time in the Premier League.
