OFFICIAL: Lee Carsley appointed interim England coach

England's senior national football team on Friday appointed Lee Carsley as the new interim head coach for the Three Lions' upcoming Nations League clashes next month.

"It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League."

The 50-year-old fills the gap left by Gareth Southgate after his resignation following the last EURO where England finished runners-up after being beaten by Spain in the final in Berlin.

Carsley leaves his position in charge of England U21s, initially for the September matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, but with the possibility of staying on throughout the autumn as the Football Association continues its recruitment for a new permanent coach.

The new England boss has been in charge of England Men's under-21s since 2021 and last year led the Young Lions to their first UEFA U21 European Championship since 1984. The former Everton player also has club-level experience having worked in the first team at Coventry City, Sheffield United, Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham City.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham praised Carsley as a "fantastic coach" after the appointment.  “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level."
