Mario Mandzukic's period without a club is over. The deal that has been talked about for several days is now official. After a pre-agreement with the player, he went to Milan for his medical and sign the papers. He will be at the club until the end of the season initially.
In Italy they are saying that the 34 year-old could stay there until 2022 if the Rossoneri qualify for the Champions League, something which seems likely to happen. He would get around two million euros net.
The Croatian striker will resume his career in Serie A. He moved to Al-Duhail in Qatar after four and a half seasons at Juventus. The Milanese outfit announced he will wear the number nine shirt.
Mandzukic arrives so that Stefano Pioli can sometimes give rest to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Even more necessary in a season which has seen COVID-19 and injuries cause AC Milan some problems. If they play together, Milan's strike force will be a total of 73 years old.
That said, it is not yet known how well the Croatian striker can play. He only played nine matches for Al-Duhail and scored a couple of goals. After several months out, he will need some time to get back to his best.
Mandzukic is finally back in European football. That has ended speculation linking him with several different teams. Now he needs to prove to AC Milan why they were right to sign him. He scored 44 goals and got 20 assists in 162 appearances for Juventus.
