Espanyol have fired Abelardo this Saturday at noon in a desperate bid to try and get salvation in the remaining seven rounds of the season.
But avoiding relegation is looking unlikely, as they are now bottom with 24 points, eight away from Eibar. The other teams in the red zone are Leganés, with just one more point, and Mallorca, with 26.

Espanyol left a good part of their options to stay in the league last Thursday against Betis, against whom they lost by a single goal.
Even so, and despite the complicated schedule ahead, the Catalans are hoping for a miracle. This Sunday they will receive Real Madrid and in the following days they will face Real Sociedad, Leganés, Barça, Eibar, Valencia and Celta.
Abelardo came to the bench in late December and made his debut against Barcelona in January with a poor La Liga record of 14 points from 13 games.
"RCD Espanyol informs that Abelardo Fernández has been dismissed from his responsibilities as coach of the first men's team. The club has taken this decision as a result of the sport performance and with the clear will of saving the category of the blue and white team in La Liga. The rest of the coaching staff, Tomás Hervás and Iñaki Tejada, have also been dismissed from their duties", published the 'perico' team.
