The time Real Madrid lifted the trophy after finishing second

On Wednesday, Real Madrid host Borussia Dortmund at the Santiago Bernabeu and not even a win will see them top Group H. However, there are no signs of panic in the Spanish capital thanks to a promising precedent.

Real Madrid are without question the most successful club ever to feature in the Champions League. In recent times, the 'Blancos' have managed to achieve continental glory consistently and they have even managed to be crowned champions after failing to win their group.

Most times Real lifted the coveted trophy, they did so by cruising through the group stages first, topping their group every time but one. Last season they were paired with Borussia Dortmund. Tonight's opponents went through in first position with 14 points while Real Madrid were runners-up with 12. Legia Warsaw (4) and Sporting Lisbon (3) were knocked out of the competition.

Real Madrid faced Napoli in the last 16, with the first leg taking place at the Santiago Bernabeu and the return fixture at San Paolo. The same situation will repeat itself this year; Zidane's men are set to be paired with one of the group leaders and the second leg will be held away from the Bernabeu.

This is no cause for panic in Madrid. Last season, Real were crowned winners of the Champions League thanks to a dominant display over Juventus. They did so after finishing second in their group. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice before Casemiro and Asensio completed the scoresheet in Cardiff.
