Neither Ronaldo nor Messi: Dzeko lands unprecedented hat-trick

He may not be considered among the best players in football, but Edin Dzeko has landed an impressive record, never managed before by any of the continent's front men.

The Bosnian striker made his name in Germany, scoring 66 goals in 111 games for Wolfsburg as he helped them win the Bundesliga title in 2009. This resulted in Manchester City splashing out £27million for the target man, and in four and a half seasons in England he scored 50 in 130 matches, despite always being second choice to Sergio Aguero.

He was then shipped out to Roma and quickly made his mark, scoring 29 league goals in 27 appearances in his second season in Italy. A brace against leaders Napoli on Saturday took his total for this term up to 13, and his overall tally in the Serie A up to 50.

As well as managing a half-century in Italy, Dzeko has also bagged over 50 in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, and achieved the milestone in the Premier League with Manchester City, becoming the first player to score 50 goals in three of Europe's top five leagues.

Something that seems unthinkable for one-club man Lionel Messi, who scored his 600th goal for club un country on Sunday but would require spells in two different European leagues to equal this particular record. It's more attainable for a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, who has well over 50 league goals for Manchester United and Real Madrid. A return to childhood club Sporting CP in the closing stages of his career could give him the chance to join Dzeko, currently the only player to achieve this unusual feat.
