In what was a very good performance from the magpies, they go away with their first three points of the season and with a lot more confidence in new manager Steve Bruce. On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur will go away feeling disappointed with the loss and with their performance, as they could not make it count when it mattered the most. 0-1 Newcastle.
It was a game which saw Newcastle United midfielder Saint-Maximin make his debut, only to go off injured with what looked like a hamstring problem in the 14th minute. It was also a very open game, going backwards and forwards between the two sides. Tottenham dominated in possession.
Newcastle's defence was strong and solid and saw off any attack from Spurs. It was the 26th minute when Newcastle opened the scoreline with a stunning strike from Joelinton and a clever assist from Atsu (who came on to replace Saint-Maximin).
After this, Tottenham struggled to attack properly and Newcastle just gained some much-needed confidence! However, at half time, Tottenham went off the most frustrated of the two sides and Newcastle would be happy with the way the performed, as the underdogs unexpectedly took the lead early on.
The second half saw a lot of chances and missed opportunities, mainly from the London side, who could not get the equaliser which they really needed.
Lascelles had to go off, with a slight injury, hopefully it isn't too serious as he was a key man in the game for Newcastle. Joelinton also went off later on and received a yellow card for time wasting as he took an age to walk off the pitch.
Six minutes of added time saw Tottenham try to attack as much as possible. Newcastle just had to hold on to their lead and did everything they could to make sure that they secured the three points. It was a surprising result, but one that the Northener's really needed to build their confidence and morale going into the next game.
Harry Kane was very quiet throughout the game, he had a shot in the last few seconds, but could not make it count and it was easily dealt with by Newcastle.
Overall, a very disappointing game for a Tottenham Hotspur who were not on their top-form by a mile. Newcastle United and Steve Bruce will go away from the game feeling optimistic and very happy, not only with the win, but with the performance, as they showed strength and fight until the final second! 0-1 Newcastle.
