New York City announced this Sunday the signing of Gedion Zelalem for the 2020 season. The German midfielder signs after his contract ended at Sporting Kansas City where last season he played nine MLS matches after leaving the Arsenal academy.
At 22, Zelalem is starting to settle down in US football after a shaking start. Although he was one of the more interesting young talents from the Gunners academy, the man born in Berlin, never made his first team debut for them. He went out on loan on two occasions: to Rangers and VVV Venlo.
He returned to Arsenal in 2017 where he struggled for game time until he joined Sporting KC in March 2019. Now he has the opportunity at New York City who led the Eastern Conference before losing to Toronto FC in the Conference semi-finals.
“I’m really excited to be joining New York City FC. The club has established a culture and style of play that I’m really looking forward to being a part of. I know they had a great season last year and the team will only go upwards from there. It’s also a great city to live in, but mostly I’m ready to win a lot of soccer matches in 2020," the footballer said after the move was completed.
