Former teammate of Rooney at Everton, Phil Neville has applauded the move for the Liverpudlian to recieve an international farewell at Wembley this month.
England's record goalscorer with 53 international goals, the Football Association announced this week that the upcoming friendly with the United States of America will be used to generate money for Rooney's charity, and will carry the name ''The Wayne Rooney Foundation international'.
Lionesses coach Phil Neville has spoken out against the criticism of the involvement of Rooney, who has not represented the national since for over two years.
Neville was asked about the occasion in a press conference this week, in which he insisted that "one of England's greatest ever goal scorers" (Rooney) deserves such a level of recognition.
He also added that the striker is "worth celebrating and respecting" for all he has done for the England national side throughout his career.
Neville's words echo the thoughts of current England and Manchester City right back Kyle Walker, who also moved to support the idea of giving Rooney a send off this month.
