Napoli star McTominay reflects on misused role at Man United

The Scotland international, who joined Napoli in the summer, spent much of his Manchester United career playing out of position, which he now admits was a significant challenge. In a candid interview with The Athletic, McTominay, who made over 250 appearances for United, explained that his strengths had always been getting into the box and scoring goals.
However, he was frequently deployed as a deep-lying midfielder or even a centre-back during his early years at the club, roles he felt were not aligned with his skill set.
"From the start, I was misprofiled in where I was playing," he said. "My strengths have always been getting into the box and being a goal threat, but I was being used as a number six or a centre-back. That's never really been my game."
Despite his personal feelings, the 28-year-old acknowledged that, as a young player at a top club like Manchester United, it wasn't realistic to challenge the coach's decisions.
"When you're playing for Manchester United at 20, you can't knock on the manager's door and say you expect to play ahead of Paul Pogba. You have to know your place," he explained.
Over the years, McTominay gradually adapted to different roles, and under Erik ten Hag, he was given more freedom to push forward, becoming a more regular goal-scorer. Last season, he scored ten goals across all competitions, earning praise for his contributions, particularly in key moments.
Reflecting on his time at United, the player noted the competition for places but expressed his determination to prove his worth. "My mentality was always that I was there, ready to take my opportunity," he said. "I wanted to show I could play every game, and that's what drove me."
Now at Napoli, the No.8 feels he has found a better fit for his skills. He admitted that life with the Red Devils had become difficult, with uncertainty about his future, but the move to Serie A has been a positive change.
"The passion of the fans at Napoli and the quality of the league has been incredible," he shared. "People underestimate Serie A. Physically and tactically, I've had some of my hardest games here."
With a fresh start in Italy, McTominay is looking forward to a new chapter in his career, where he can fully embrace his strengths and make an impact.
