"My dream is to manage Barca, hopefully I have the chance"
Netherlands manager, Ronald Koeman, acknowledged that he received a call from Barcelona when the club sacked Ernesto Valverde in January, but that he preferred to keep his word with the Federation to play the Euros. In an interview with the programme 'Tot Gira' on 'Catalunya Ràdio', the ex-player explained that Barca got in touch with him in January.
"I had a call, but I had to keep my word to the national team to play the Euros. I'm fine with the players and for me, the most important thing is the Dutch national team", he explained.
The goalscorer in the game that Barca won their first European Cup revealed that he has a contract "with the possibility of being able to leave after the Euros" which will finally be played in 2021 due to the break caused by the coronavirus.
"Everyone knows that it is a dream to manage Barca, but hopefully I can have another opportunity," said Koeman, who stressed that "you have to have a lot of experience" to manage Barca.
The ex-Everton, Ajax and Valencia manager, amongst other teams, also took the opportunity to analyse the first few months at the Camp Nou of his pupil in the national team, Frenkie de Jong.
In this regard, he opined that his position on the park is the one that Sergio Busquets currently occupies in the majority of games, although he pointed out that "it's not bad to adapt in other positions either".
"He's a young player, who needs to be given time. I'm sure he'll soon show his level with Barca and the Dutch national team. I have no doubt that he is a player with the level to play at Barca," he added.
Koeman also affirmed that he is fully recovered from the heart problem which forced him to be admitted to a hospital in Amsterdam a month ago.
"I feel fine. It's been a month since the problem I had and I'm happy to be in shape. I had a check-up last week with the cardiologist, and everything went well. He told me that I have to take care of myself, but it's a good feeling," he said.
