Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera "did a Karius" on Friday as he allowed France star Anotine Griezmann's strike to slip through his hands and into the back of the net during the World Cup quarter-final clash between the two sides.

'Les Bleus' were already leading 1-0 thanks to Raphael Varane's header as the game moved into its second period, but it would prove to be a monumental error that allowed them to double their lead.

With 61 minutes on the clock, Griezmann received the ball some 20 yards out and with no defending coming to close him down, he opted to try his luck.

The Atletico Madrid man caught his effort well enough, but it looked to be going straight at Muslera, whose view was completely unimpeded.

There was some late movement on the ball, but the Uruguay stopper attempted to punch it to safety rather than catch it, with his team-mates watching in horror as it skidded off the edge of his gloves and over the line.

It was a cruel way for Uruguay to concede and potentially an even crueler way for a World Cup campaign to come to an end.
