Alvaro Morata started the game against Burnley, which Chelsea won 1-2, however when he was retired to the bench in the 71st minute, the forward had nothing to show for his time on the pitch, and demonstrated his frustration, kicking out at the dugout.
The Spaniard had three shots in total during his 70 minutes, and he failed to hit the back of the net on all three occasions, finding himself kept out by Burnley keeper Nick Pope twice, after hesitating too long for the first chance. The third chance was the most blush-enducing however, as the forward put a clear cut chance wide of the post.
Morata had one of the best minutes-per-goal ratios of anyone in Europe's top leagues last season, however since Boxing Day the Chelsea man has scored one goal in eleven games, and has looked increasingly short of confidence.
Antonio Conte started Morata alongside Oliver Giroud on Thursday, however out of the front two it was the Frenchman who made more of a case for himself for a spot in the starting XI when Chelsea take on Southampton in a season-defining FA Cup semi-final on Sunday. GIroud showed much more promise in his first away start in a blue shirt, and seems to bring more to the table than his strike partner.
Morata's £60 million price tag is almost thrice that of Giroud, and this means that he is bound to be given more preference, however Antonio Conte has a big call to make for the key game against Saints. Eden Hazard and Willian, who were both rested against Burnley, have been two of Chelsea's best players this season, and will surely be brought back into the fold for Sunday's clash.
This means that Conte, who has played with one striker for the majority of the season, will likely have to choose between Giroud and Morata. It is a tricky decision for Conte, but Oliver Giroud will have the right to feel frustrated if his name isn't in the starting XI.
