The Croatian national team won the bronze medal at the World Cup in Qatar after beating Morocco in the third-place play-off. Zlatko Dalic's side completed a great World Cup after finishing runners-up at Russia 2018.
The 37-year-old won his 162nd cap in the 2-1 win over Morocco, four years after helping his country to the World Cup runners-up spot behind France. Croatia will now attempt to win the Nations League title next June in the four-team finals also featuring Netherlands, Italy and Spain.
Luka Modric spoke to 'Gol Mundial' after the meeting and once again spoke about his future as an international: "Yes, it might be my last World Cup match, but I can't say anything. I am very happy for my whole career with Croatia. It would be a nonsense not to play in the Nations League, and then we'll see how to proceed. I definitely want to stay for the Nations League."
Croatia were defeated by a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals but Modric insisted that his team have cemented a place amongst the heavyweights of the sport.
"Winning two medals is very important, my dream was to win the cup but I am very happy. We have confirmed that Croatia have a great team with a very good future. We will see what happens in the future. I want to play in the Nations League and then we'll see what happens," Modric added.
"We wanted to be in the final, we couldn't, but we went home as winners, which is also very important. Winning two medals at two World Cups is very important for Croatia. In the end, we return to Croatia as winners. Croatia is not a miracle that appears every 20 years. We proved that we are constant, that we cannot be seen as dark horses but as a football power," the Real Madrid player concluded.
