The Serbian striker was a fans' favourite on Tyneside due to his commitment and obvious talent on the pitch.
However, the 'Magpies' decided to sell him for £22 million over the summer to newly-promoted side Fulham, where Mitrovic spent a successful loan spell at the end of last season.
Rumours of a personal rift between Benitez and Mitrovic were rife, leading to fans not being surprised at the sale, but the player himself claims that the difficulties were purely from a professional point of view.
"We just didn't suit each other, I didn't suit his tactics, and I didn't really feel comfortable to play, so he couldn't get the best out of me." the striker, who has scored five times in the Premier League so far this season for Fulham, told the 'BBC'.
"But it's nothing personal - just business. We had a good relationship and he is a good guy. Defensively, he's one of the best managers that I've worked with."
With the struggles in front of goal the 'Magpies' are having in front of goal this season, it seems as though they could really do with Mitrovic's eye for goal right now.
