Leo Messi, the Barcelona captain, took to social media to talk about the club's situation as a result of COVID-19. The Argentine made clear that the team will reduce their salaries and do everything possible to make sure all the club's employees continue to get 100% of their wages.

A lot is being spoken about regarding the Barcelona situation. We were still waiting for a reaction from one of the senior figures of the squad and it has finally arrived.

Leo Messi took to social media and made clear that the entire squad are going to take a pay cut for everybody's good. The footballers have agreed to take a "70%" pay cut, the striker revealed. "The time has come to announce that, as well as reducing our salaries by 70%, we are going to make some contributions so that the employees can continue to earn 100% of their salary for as long as this situation lasts," Messi said.

The Argentine spoke in name of the whole dressing room: "We want to clarify that our wish has always been to take a pay cut because we understand the situation. We are the first to have always helped the club whenever it has been asked of us. Many times we have also done it of our own volition when we thought it was necessary or important," he pointed out.

Messi also had a dig at the board who indicated that the players were responsible for the delay. "It doesn't stop surprising us that, inside the club, there are those who are trying to put the spotlight on us and subject us to pressure to do something we were always clear we would do. If the agreement has been delayed, it is because we were looking for a formula to help the club and the workers at such a difficult time," he continued.

In addition, he explained why no player has spoken up to now. "If we hadn't spoken beforehand it was because the priority for us was to find real solutions to help the club, but also to those who are going to be most affected because of this situation."

Lastly, he sent a message of support and encouragement to those affected by COVID-19. "We didn't want to say goodbye withouth sending best wishes to all the Barca fans who are suffering during these such tough moments as well as those who are waiting patiently at home for the end of this crisis. We are going to get out of this soon and we will do it all together," Messi concluded.

Barca were planning to temporarily make redundant members of the team because of the coronavirus. The silence of the senior players had caused unease among the Barca board. Messi has now spoken and made it clear that all players will take a 70% pay cut while all workers will continue to be paid in full.
