The Barca star has a £625m release clause, which is intended to ward off potential buyers, but Schroder believes that this may not be enough to scare everyone off, citing Paris Saint-Germain's huge Neymar transfer of last summer.
Speaking at a sports finance talk in London, Schroder told 'Sky Sports' that anything is possible in football these days. "We set up a clause which we think is enough to have Messi retire at FC Barcelona," he began.
"But having said that, we thought a year ago that the clause for Neymar was also good enough to retain the player, and that proved last summer not to be the case.
"Looking at the future, I think, is difficult, but I don't have a crystal ball and these days things are getting a little bit crazy."
Barca will hope nobody is rich enough to meet the Argentinian's lofty price tag, as the forward remains in glittering form, having scored 32 goals this season in all competitions.
