The coach of Argentine club Dorados fired shots loaded with more than a mere tone of inquiry, when he questioned the commitment of Rosario-born Messi to the national team, in what proved to be some very harsh comments against the forward. Yet Barcelona simply will not let their talisman be defiled in that way. And so was provoked a very strong reply from the Catalan giants.
"Say what you will about Maradona's comments towards the best player in history; I think the tone is self-evident, we will always defend Messi, who is a player that has been a role model both on and off the field," said Josep Vives.
The 'Azulgrana' spokesman, after first speaking to the board of directors, wanted to settle any further controversy surrounding Maradona's comments. However he did continue to talk about Messi.
"Neither the club or the spokesperson has proposed any offer of a renewal, the last one was already well considered, and I think it is a comfortable framework for all parties to work to, it is not an issue that needs discussing at the moment, " said the Director.
According to the Director, "Messi is very comfortable in his role, you can see how he feels on and off the field, in his position as captain."
Barcelona were equally forceful in their approach to addressing the apparent contract offer of Manchester City; denied by the Premier League champions themselves, who were rumoured to be prepared to triple Messi's salary to convince him to move to England.
"From Barcelona we are unaware of this offer, but the most important thing is that Leo is here, if this rumour is true, even more credit should be given to Messi, because he loves his peopl, his city, his club and he will not move away for anything," said the Barça spokesperson.
