A goal against Sevilla, another against Valladolid and two against Celta. Leo Messi's start to the season in regards to free kicks is amazing.
The Argentine has scored 52 goals in this way and now comes face to face with one of his masters, a Diego Armando Maradona who always stated that it was he who had started to teach the Barcelona star.
Maradona scored 59 goals from free kicks in his career, so, if Messi's 2019/20 season goes well, he could surpass him on this figure.
Interestingly, although Diego has always attributed the improvement of Messi's set-pieces to himself, it was Alfio 'Coco' Basile who was the most determined to improve him.
"The first to talk to me about free kicks was the 'Coco' Basile. Let go of the foot, let go of the foot,' he shouted at me. And he told me that my free kicks seemed to be centered," Messi acknowledged long ago.
"He wanted me to watch him pass to Riquelme. He was one of the first to start with that," insisted Leo, who also acknowledged Maradona's advice: "Then I remember that, in South Africa, with the coach and Diego, we stayed practicing".
