After a poor start to life in the competition, Scotland face a winner takes all match against Israel on Tuesday, that will see the victor earn a EURO 2020 play-off spot.
Scotland's defeat in Haifa last month means that the side's head to head record would fall in favour of Israel in the event of a draw on Tuesaday.
Nevertheless, Scotland boss McLeish is in confident mood ahead of the match.
In his press conference ahead of the match at Hampden Park, McLeish stated: "We had to take some hits. We're still evolving. Just because of one victory, it doesn't mean that's Scotland away and flying. We've still got a lot of evolving to do."
He continued: "I really feel as though we're just getting started now, with that heart-warming performance of the players the other night."
Scotland recorded just their third win of McLeish's second spell in charge, a 4-0 win away to Albania in Shkoder, which set up the winner takes all clash with Israel this week.
Having only previously scored one goal in the opening six games of McLeish's tenure, Scotland are well and truly coming good at the right time for their under pressure boss.
McLeish concluded: "I tried a lot of players when we had the friendlies in South America and the first two against Costa Rica and Hungary. There's a lot of experimentation and people have to patient. It's not an overnighter. Everybody in the backroom staff is doing massive work behind the scenes. We feel positive about this group of players."
