Marcelo terminates Fluminense contract after argument with manager

Tension is high at the Brazilian club. Fluminense, who threw away their one-goal lead to concede at the 99th minute against Gremio, have announced that Marcelo is no longer their player following a mutual agreement between the two parties to end terminate his contract. Fluminense confirmed the decision via an official statement released on Saturday.

"Fluminense FC and Marcelo Vieira announce the termination of the contract by mutual agreement between the parties. Having made up his way through the club's youth academy, Marcelo returned to Fluminense in 2023, playing a part in winning the Campeonato Carioca 2023, the unprecedented CONMEBOL Libertadores 2023 and Recopa 2024 titles. The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained. The athlete's name was recently immortalised in the stadium of the Xerém training centre. Fluminense would like to thank Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support him in future endevours," read the statement.

The reason is believed to be due to an argument between Fluminense boss Mano Menezes and Marcelo, which took place during the side's latest match. It all happened as the full-back, who was ready to make his way on the pitch at the 90th minute, said something that the head coach did not appreciate. Menezes did not think twice as he retracted his decision to make the substitution, sending the former Real Madrid defender back on the bench.

In the press conference following the match the manager spoke on the situation, stating the following: "I wanted to bring on Marcelo, but something happened that I didn't like and I changed my mind. So, I put John Kennedy instead." Marcelo's contract with the Fluminense was valid until the end of 2024, however, the current circumstances have led to an early release of the player. Reports from Brazilian outlets claim that Marcelo is not among the most loved at the club.
