Croatia started the game well, but with 18 minutes on the clock at the Luzhniki they found themselves behind.
Marcelo Brozovic was adjudged to have fouled Antoine Griezmann in midfield, despite the replays appearing to show the France striker throwing himself to the ground with little if any actual contact.
Nevertheless, that gave 'Les Bleus' the perfect chance to swing the ball into the box.
Griezmann dusted himself down to do just that, lofting in a teasing ball that Mandzukic could only flick beyond Danijel Subasic and into the back of his own net.
That wasn't the end of the drama though, with replays appearing to show that Paul Pogba, who challenge for the header just behind the Croatia striker, was marginally offside in the build-up, leading to suggestions he was interfering with play and the goal was therefore offside.
However, VAR was not consulted and the goal was allowed to stand.
