Manchester United made history earlier this year when they decided to set up a women's side after 13 years without one.
In an interesting twist, it was then announced that the sides' first test would be against rivals Liverpool, from where new Red Devils manager Casey Stoney had poached nine players.
It was bound to be a tough match for the young United side, and they left it late in the game to secure the win.
Lizzie Arnot was on hand to convert captain Alex Greenwood's cross in the 84th minute, after neither side had been unable to break the deadlock.
Stoney recently told players that she wanted them "to go out there and prove that they've made the correct decision to come to Manchester United."
Stoney's players delivered the perfect response, and were strong and effective both on and off the ball.
Arnot was arguably United's star player, running riot in the Liverpool half, and making run after run at goalkeeper Anke Preuss.
United came close, as Katie Zelem's free-kick caught Liverpool defence on their heels, but Amy Turner was unable to get her shot on target.
Liverpool were unable to break into the game or create anything until the half hour mark, when a scrap for the ball ensued in the United area.
However, Liverpool were unable to make the most of the opportunity.
The second half started slowly, with both sides looking sluggish.
United picked up the tempo as the half went on, and Stoney instructed her side to attack with more aggression, which they appeared to do.
Leah Galton and Jess Sigsworth both found themselves in good positions, but were unable to make the most of the opportunities.
United appealled for a penalty after Lauren James' shot was allegedly blocked by the hand of Leighanne Robe, but the referee waved for play on.
However, United would get the winner just eight minutes from the final whistle.
Arnot was able to finish her first goal for the club neatly, after Greenwood pulled a clever run and cross out the bag.
Liverpool did nearly equalise in the dying minutes of the game as Christie Murray stepped up for a dangerous free-kick, but it hit the post.
Stoney will be happy with her sides' debut, which shows that the future for her young team should be bright in the FA Women's Championship this year.
