Manchester City set sights on Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt

As Pep Guardiola seeks out a long-term replacement for injury-dogged Vincent Kompany, Ajax defender de Ligt has emerged as a potential transfer target.

The Dutchman has youth on his side and at 18-years-old has made 34 appearances in all competitions last season. De Ligt also featured in the starting lineup against Manchester United in the Europa League final last year.

Kompany has suffered an injury prone campaign having only played in eight of City's matches in the latter stages of the season, leading to questions over his future at the Etihad.

Guardiola already has three other centre-back options in the form of Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, but could be seeking out the youngster as a means of freshening up ahead of their bid to defend the Premier League title.
