Madrid legend Goyo Benito passes away

Real Madrid and all the Madrid family are mourning. On Thursday the death of the legendary ex-defender Goyo Benito at 73 years old was made known. He had been suffering an illness for more than a decade.

At 16 he already started to form part of Real Madrid and has always been characterised for his physical potential and his mustache. He played 420 official matches for Los Blancos.

Goyo Benito won 6 leagues and 5 Spanish Cups over the 13 seasons he was at Real Madrid. With Spain he also won 22 caps.

"Real Madrid C. F. wishes to share its condolences and sends its affection to his wife, Paula, and children, Patricia, Rubén and Alejandro, all of his family and loved ones. These condolences are also offered on behalf of madridistas from all over the world. Goyo Benito was always a fine representative of our club's values", Real Madrid said in a statement.

Real Madrid indicated that they had always supported him in his fight against the illness.

"The Real Madrid family is today in mourning as we remember one of the great defenders in our club's history", the message from Madrid ends.
