Manchester City are yet to agree terms on a new deal for youngster Brahim Diaz, who is understood to want assurances over his first team future at the Etihad stadium.
Now into the last year of his current deal, the delays from Diaz could spell disaster for the Premier League champions, with Real Madrid poised to take advantage of the situation, and secure the starlet for themselves.
A key figure in the Spain U21 side, the 19 year old forward is said to be unhappy at his first team opportunities at Manchester City, who made another big money attacking signing in the form of Riyad Mahrez in the summer.
Perhaps the great turn in fortunes for his former academy teammate Jadon Sancho, is weighing on the mind of the young player, who wants to blossom in the same vein himself.
Therefore, Diaz could opt to return to his native Spain in order to make himself a star.
Of course, it is not guaranteed that Diaz will get regular first team minutes at Madrid, with the likes of Vinicius Jr and Marco Asensio sure to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
Also, Neymar is still on the Spanish club's radar, which could see Diaz be loaned out, if the Brazilian does indeed arrive from Paris Saint Germain.
However, it seems that Diaz is confident that if he moves elsewhere, he can force his way into a first team. Granted, Manchester City's side is a near impossible task for anyone to break into, let alone an inexperienced young player.
It is also thought that Diaz' family would favour a move to Spain, if the player no longer sees his future in Manchester.
Madrid have set Diaz as their main target, should the youngster not agree a new deal in England. Yet if all is resolved between Diaz and City, the Spanish giants could also target Tottenham's Christian Eriksen or out of favour Manchester United striker Anthony Martial.
It is thought that Madrid favour Diaz as their primary target, as he possesses both key attributes that they look for in a player; an expiring contract, and family contacts in Spain.
It remains to be seen what will happen with the player, but it must be said that it is very hard for any player to turn down the advances of Real Madrid.
