Lukaku endured a difficult afternoon as United were defeated by Antonio Conte's Chelsea on Sunday.
The 1-0 defeat was the seventh game in which the Belgian striker has gone without finding the back of the net, despite starting the season in sparkling form.
If he wants to get back to his goalscoring best, he might want to take on advice from the Premier League's all-time top scorer, Alan Shearer.
He said on 'Match of the Day': "When you're on a barren spell, forget everything about going out wide, about coming deep, thinking I'm not getting a touch of the ball.
"It's time to be selfish. Width of the 18-yard box, that's what he's got to think about. He isn’t going to score by running into corners.
"Let the people create the chances for you. He's a goal-scorer and he’s getting judged on scoring goals."
The 24-year-old cut an isolated figure during the clash at Stamford Bridge as the rest of United's attacking players struggled to carve out any opportunities for their star striker, but Shearer doesn't believe dropping deep to create chances for himself is the solution to his problems.
"He's going deep, he's going out wide. He's not helping himself and he's certainly not helping his team," the former Newcastle striker said.
"It's not his job to go deep and create. Width of the 18-yard box, that's where he's most dangerous and that's where he's going to score goals."
Fellow striker Ian Wright also shared sympathy for Lukaku, and said that his creative team-mates were to blame for his barren spell in front of goal.
He said: "I do feel for him. He seems to be making the wrong moves and the chances aren't coming.
'Mkhitaryan had six passes to him today as they're attacking midfielder. That is nowhere near good enough and he needs to look at himself."
Lukaku will hope he can end his goal drought and close the gap with title rivals Manchester City when they come up against Newcastle after the international break.
