The Liverpool defender had a frustrating game as he lost out in his second final of the season, after his loss in the Champions League final with his club.
Croatia had not been tipped to get as far as the final before the tournament began, with this being the only time in their history the nation has played in the biggest game in international football, but the defender was not happy with the manner in which the French beat them.
"We have been better today and overall we have been better. France didn't play football. They waited for their chance and they scored. They had their one tactic and you have to respect it. They played every game of the tournament like that." he said in an interview after the game.
For many, the turning point in the game was when referee Nester Pintana gave a penalty against Ivan Perisic for a handball in the French box, after using VAR to chnage his original decision.
Critics have pointed out that Perisic could not have moved his hand out of the way in time, given the proximity of himself to French midfielder Blaise Matuidi, and Lovren is the latest person to share his confusion at the decision.
"I was sure he would not give the penalty. Our player could not react, it's impossible when you are so close to the ball. It was a critical moment." he explained.
"VAR needs to improve. Sometimes it is a penalty and sometimes not. I really don't understand. A lot of people say it's not a penalty but what can we do now? Nobody understands the rules."
