France may have added a second star to their shirts, but not everyone is convinced by their dominance.
Lothar Matthaus, the German football legend, is among those doubters. He believes that Les Bleus did not give their best in Russia, despite bringing home the trophy.
Deschamps' team did not look like clear winners during the first few rounds of the competition, before they eventually got into gear and were able to beat Croatia 4-2 in the final.
Matthaus wrote in a column in German publication Bild, reflecting on France's performance, and what it could mean for the future of the team.
"I do not believe that the French will establish an era," he wrote.
"The team did not adopt any style or convince with fascinating football. They did not push their opponents to the edge."
Matthaus was a World Cup winner with Germany in 1990, after he also won the European Championships in 1980, and he knows what it takes for a team to establish dominance.
However, he may be unconvinced by Les Bleus overall, but there are some players which have caught his eye.
19-year-old Mbappe who was awarded the FIFA Young Player award for his performance during the tournament, could be a future Golden Ball winner according to Matthaus:
"He plays with a tremendous ease, but is also down to earth. Mbappe plays seriously, he does not play for show."
"He now has a world title and is certainly a hot tip for the World Player of the Year award for 2018," he added.
