In 2015, Anfield had a maximum capacity of around 45,000 seats. However, in just a few years time, the stadium could see its regular attendance increased to 60,000.
Liverpool began expanding their iconic ground back in 2014, after investment from new owners Fenway Sports Group allowed them to begin work on extending their Main Stand. The work on the stand increased the ground's capacity by over 8,000, taking it to 54,074. The building work was completed for the start of the 2016/7 season, and has been well received at the club.
After the stand was completed, the idea to undertake similar work on the Anfield Road stand was floated, although there were no concrete plans to get started straight away.
However, the increased capacity of the Main Stand has turned out to be even more succesful than expected for the club. In early March the Merseyside club announced that matchday income had increased by an impressive £12million, and this has prompted the owners to push forward with the Anfield Road plans.
According to reports in the 'Daily Mail', Liverpool will now fast-track the project, which is expected to see an extra tier added to the stand, increasing the capacity by a further 6,000, up to 60,000. Furthermore, there is also a considerable amount of interest from high-profile companies looking to put their name on the stand, and this sponsorship opportunity will be a large incentive for Fenway Sports Group.
If the plans go through, Anfield would draw level with West Ham's London Stadium's capacity, and would be on par with Arsenal's Emirates Stadium (60,260), and Tottenham's 'new' White Hart Lane (62,062).
