It was a great game, in which Liverpool really showed their quality, despite the overload of fixtures they had over the Christmas period. Sheffield United got the game underway, in what was their first game at Anfield in 13 years.
And it only took the Reds 3 minutes to dominate the game, with a superb finish from the one and only Mo Salah. Baldock tried to chase him down on the left wing, but he slipped over and Salah got away from him because of this, meaning he went one on one with the keeper and didin't hesitate in slotting the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunate for Sheffield who needed to gain confidence after this goal.
Liverpool have won 27 of their last 28 Premier League matches, an outstanding record for the Reds.
The home side really put the Blades under pressure and made them play from the back, pushing them back all the time, as Sheffield din't really seem much of an attacking threat.
Dean Henderson had been pivotal in the first half in stopping Sheffield from going even further behind and he made another important save just before the whistle. The ball was passed in for Mane, but he couldn't quite get to it, Salah came out of nowhere and launched the ball towards goal, but Henderson got a hand to it.
The half time whistle blew and an early mistake from George Baldock saw the home side take the lead, thanks to Mo Salah. Liverpool were by far the better side in this half and deserved the lead that they had. Chris Wilder would be disappointed with how his team have performed.
In the second half Sheffield looked to do much the same as what they did in the first half, it seemed to be that they were going to pick and choose when to attack as they didn't seem to be producing much of an attacking threat early on in the half.
However, their confidence was once again shattered when Liverpool doubled their lead in the 63rd minute of the game. An incredible one-two from the break, Mane passed the ball to Salah at the edge of the box, then ran back into the middle of the box to receive it again, Henderson came out and blocked the first ball, but Mane was there to slot the second into the back of the net!
Sheffield then changed things up as they brought on strikers Sharp and Mcburnie for Mousset and Mcgoldrick, but they failed to make much of a difference!
Mcburnie had a chance late on in the 87th minute, after the ball was fizzed in by O'connell, but Alisson saved the ball just on the line! Nothing much Sheffield United could do, as they were now just waiting for the final whistle to blow.
Full time led to victory number 19 for Liverpool as they beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield! Goals from Mo Salah and Sadio Mane helped Liverpool cruise to their one year unbeaten run at home. Sheffield United showed signs of good play, but in the end, Liverpool were just far too good for them. Liverpool now go 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League! No team in the Premier League have completed as many passes as what Liverpool have done tonight, with a whopping 828. Final score, 2-0.
