Another accomplished performance from Chelsea. Southampton did create two very presentable chances and if Bertrand and especially Ings had been more clinical the game could have been different. However the 'Blues' were just too good and deserved the comprehensive victory.
Thats it at St Mary's, Chelsea win 3-0
Morata makes it three! The Spanish striker gets on the scoresheet, More fantastic play sees Hazard put him through on goal, with no time to let his demons get into his head he dinks it delicately over McCarthey
In the first of four additional minutes Ings gets in between two defenders in the box, but his shot is harmlessly wide
Danny Ings goes into the book for a really poor challenge on Kovacic, born out of frustration no doubt he really could have seen red there
Rudiger can't quite turn a delivery into the box in, he then commits a canny foul to prevent a counter attack
From the resulting corner Wesley Hoedt smashes a volley over the bar
Another save from Kepa. It is Ings who shoots from distance this time, the Spaniard is again equal to it
Barkley is off after his goal, with Mateo Kovacic replacing him
Almost the curse of the commentator!! Redmond unleashes a brilliant drive which Kepa does brilliantly to tip onto the bar, Chelsea then hit them on the counter attack, Hazard plays Morata in but he is denied one on one
The game has quietened down after Chelsea's second goal. While they look comfortable, neither team looks particularly threatening
Giroud is taken off and Morata enters in place of him
A ball is lofted into the box and Rudiger, on the stretch, can only just nod it away, but he does brilliantly to block Hojbjerg's effort after the ball fell to him
Ross Barkley has his first goal for Chelsea! Willian floats in a free kick to the box, Olivier Giroud finds space and directs a brilliant acrobatic cross-come-shot into the box, Barkley arrives in the middle and diverts the ball in from a yard out
Another great chance for Southampton. Hojbjerg drifts in a great ball to the box, Betrand is in at the back post but puts a volley over in similar fashion to Ings, not such a sitter but he should do better
At the beginning of the second half Mark Hughes had made a tactical change, with midfielder Oriol Romeu replacing defender Jan Bednerak
We're back underway
An interesting half of football. Southampton really should have taken the lead, Ings will be ruing his miss even more with Hazard striking almost immediately after he fluffed his lines.
The freekick comes to nothing and the first half ends 1-0
Ryan Bertrand goes into the book for his protestations about the spot a freekick is awarded
Marcos Alonso gets on the end of a corner, but can't quite adjust to divert the ball in
That takes Hazard to eight goals for the season:
The game has returned to the same pattern it had had before the goal. They are back in numbers once again and Hoedt blocks Kante's strike. The diminutive midfielder also looks to have had a potential penalty denied. He has his shirt pulled by Betrand but makes nothing of it, perhaps costing him the chance of winning his team a spot kick
A cruel blow for Southampton, who so nearly took the lead minutes before. Ings will be ruing that missed chance even more
GOAL Chelsea! Hoedt originally denies Hazard with a fantastic challenge, but Hojbjerg immediately loses out to Barkley in midfield, he snaps into the tackle and feeds the Belgian who is unmarked and makes no mistake, dispatching a cool finish low past McCarthey
Penalty shout for Chelsea! Hoedt slides in on Giroud in the box, initially it looks like a fantastic tackle, but replays show Giroud got his foot to the ball first, hard to spot but in real time
What a chance for Southampton! Bertrand does fantastically well on the left and whips in a great cross. It picks out Ings at the back post but he can't turn the volley in from five yards with the goal at his mercy. What a let off for Chelsea
The home side threaten for the first time! Gabbiadini finds space on the edge of the box, its a good dipping strike from the Italian, but its too close to Arrizabalaga, who gathers.
The point is illustrated as Hazard tries to jink into a crowded box, he still finds Kante, who lays it to Barkely who fires over from just outside the box. The football is beautiful but they are again crowded out
Southampton are posing little threat at the moment, with Chelsea dominating possession, however they still can't create a presentable opening
Southampton can't get out at the moment. Chelsea however haven't worked a clear opening, with the Saints getting back well in numbers
Hazard threatens properly for the first time. he looks to have opened up enough space to shoot but Bednarek blocks well and repeats the trick from the rebound. Great defending. Willian then sees his deflected shot narrowly miss
It's a fairly open start at St Mary's with both teams looking to get their forwards in behind in the opening stages
kick off and we're underway in the sunshine at St Mary's
The teams are in the tunnel and we're almost underway
Chelsea line up almost exactly as expected, however Barkley is in over Kovacic in a somewhat surprising move, Morata stays on the bench despite his goal in midweek
So Southampton will line up in a three at the back system, which you expect could become a five when Chelsea attack. Mohamed Elyounossi looks to have not made it through a late fitness test
Chelsea: Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso; Jorginho, Kante, Barkley; Willian, Hazard, Giroud
Southampton XI: McCarthey; Hoedt, Yoshida, Bednarek; Cedric, Hojbjerg, Lemina, Bertrand; Redmond, Gabbiadini, Ings Substitutes: Gunn, Targett, Vestergaard, Davis, Romeu, Austin, Long
And the visitors:
The home team:
