A message of support from sacked Spain boss Julen Lopetegui: "All the best as this World Cup to Fernando and a magnificent team and a great group of people" Doesn't sound like he holds a grudge...

Cristiano Ronaldo was involved in more goals than any other player in European qualifying (15 goals, three assists), but he has never scored against Spain.

The atmosphere is building here in Sochi...

The stats suggest Portugal won't be on the losing side tonight:
  • PRVW
The players are out on the pitch getting their warm-ups underway here ahead of what should be a cracker.
  • PRVW
Fernando Hierro has certainly gone safety first for this one, preferring Koke and Nacho to Thiago and Odriozola. He's shown Portugal plenty of respect, but retains plenty of otpions off the bench to attempt to change the course of the game.
  • PRVW
David De Gea, Nacho and Isco make their first World Cup appearances for Spain tonight.
  • PRVW
A late own goal has handed Iran victory in the other game in the group, meaning that they lead the way ahead of this one.
  • PRVW
These sides have only previously met once at the World Cup, with Spain emerging 1-0 winners thanks to a David Villa goal in the last 16 on the way to winning the title.
  • PRVW
Portugal look a force themselves going forward. Gonçalo Guedes and Bernardo Silva flank Cristiano Ronaldo in attack. Though there are question marks about their defensive solidity with ageing duo Pepe and Jose Fonte given the task of keeping the back door shut. Joao Mario is a surprise omisison in midfield, with Bruno Fernandes preferred.
  • PRVW
So, Diego Costa is the man to get the nod up front for Spain in a side that certainly doesn't lack creativity. Isco and David Silva are likely to be key to their side's hopes tonight and throughout the tournament and they could barely ask for a better taget to play off than Costa. With Dani Carvajal still injured Nacho comes in at right-back.
  • PRVW
Portugal: Rui Patricio; Cedric, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro; Carvalho, Moutinho, Bruno Fernandes; Bernardo Silva, Ronaldo, Guedes.
  • PRVW
Spain: De Gea; Nacho, Pique, Ramos, Jordi Alba; Busquets, Koke; Silva, Isco, Iniesta; Diego Costa.
  • PRVW
Hierro is confident that the turmoil won't have any impact on Spain's preparations: "The players are excited, they want this challenge. It's a challenge for everyone. We have no time to dwell. I know they're going to give 100 per cent. In a World Cup nobody gives anything away. We all know what this means and our responsibilities."
  • PRVW
Spain were heavily tipped to win this one and top the group, but their preparations were thrown into disarray this week after manager Julen Lopetegui opted to take the Real Madrid job, leading to Spain replacing him with Fernando Hierro just 24 hours later.
