FT: Utd 2-2 Southampton. United looked to be going third until that late drama, but they'll have to settle for fifth place with three games to go. That would mean no Champions League next season after the Man City news earlier today. Southampton stay in 12th, going level on points with Everton ahead of them.

That could be a huge goal in the race for the Champions League. United were heading third, and now they're back to fifth.

GOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!Southampton are level at the death! Obafemi gets ahead of Lindelof to flick Bednarek's header into the net from a Ward-Prowse corner.

Williams’ head is gashed, and I doubt he’ll be able to continue. Both teams have used their three substitution blocks.
  • 87'
Hasenhuttl makes an attacking change, bringing on Obafemi in place of Romeu.
  • 84'
A double change for United: Dan James and Scott McTominay replace Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes. United’s revised midfield - Matic, Fred, McTominay - is a reflection of how threatening Southampton have been.
  • 83'
Into the final 10 minutes, Southampton are getting a bit more time on the ball in the United half as the home side sit deep. Can they find a way through?
  • 80'
Martial shoots over from the edge of the box after a terrific 60-yard run that was three parts skill, one part luck
  • 72'
Now there is a problem for the hosts. Shaw goes down after tweaking his ankle attempting to put a cross in. Williams is warming up.

Smallbone comes on for Armstrong, and the players make their way to the touchline for a drinks break
  • 64'
Southampton make a change too. Birthday boy Adams is off, with Long coming on in his place.

United launch a counter-attack which looks to break down as Fernandes misplaces a pass, but the move is revived and Rashford sees a shot deflected behind for a corner as he again drives in from the left.
  • 49'
Ward-Prowse finds Redmond in acres of space on the left. Nobody closes him down and he gets to the edge of the area, but pulls a right-footed shot wide to the left of goal. He probably should have done better with that.

We're off and running for the second half. No changes from either side at the break.

HT: Man Utd 2-1 Southampton. The hosts have been excellent going forward but, given their leakiness at the back, there is a feeling they may need at least another goal to win this. You wouldn't bet against them getting it, on current form.

Ward-Prowse sees yellow for giving Fernandes a big hug from behind in the centre circle. Both arms round him, he could have given his tummy a tickle if he'd felt like it.

Bednarek puts in a great challenge on Fernandes as the Portuguese attempts to spin his way into the area following a one-two.

The home side look to spring another counter-attack down the right, but the pass for Greenwood is overhit and Bertrand recovers.

NO GOAL! Rashford has the ball in the net, but the flag goes straight up! Shaw makes a good burst from left-back and fires in an excellent low ball from deep. Rashford side-foots it home first time, but he's clearly offside.

Southampton's pressing has been absolutely exemplary so far tonight, and it's got them the opening goal. They look good when they get the ball, too.
  • 12'
It came from a mistake by Pogba, who was robbed by Ings 30 yards from goal. Redmond picked up the loose ball, ran into the area and lifted a superb ball to find Armstrong in space at the far post. He took it down calmly and slapped it past de Gea from close range.

Great save by McCarthy, but Martial should score! Ward-Prowse gives the ball away with a loose touch at the back - think Gerrard and Ba without the slip. Martial races through, clear on goal, but McCarthy rushes out to block his shot with a strong outstretched hand.

Both teams are unchanged, United for the fifth league game in a row! Don't change what works, apparently.

But this will be no easy test, as Southampton are a dangerous counter-attacking side - only Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have more away points this season – so this will be a good test of United’s progress. They now know they need to finish in the top four to qualify for the Champions League. Helpfully, a win tonight would put them third.
  • PRVW
The Red Devils have been impressive since the break and it seems even the players are pleasantly surprised. Paul Pogba has hailed Manchester United's improved form, saying they are now a "proper team" as they hunt Champions League qualification for next season.
