Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich and Barcelona's Alexia Putellas are nominees for Sportsman and Sportswomen of the Year at the 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards.
The Bayern forward is in the running along with former NFL quarterback Tom Brady, who recently retired from American football, tennis star Novak Djokovic, Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge and swimmer Caeleb Dressel are also looking to win the award off last year's winner Rafa Nadal.
Barcelona footballer Alexia Putellas is nominated as sportswoman of the year along with Ash Barty, who recently won the Australian Open, sprinters Allyson Felix and Elaine Thompson-Herah and swimmers Katie Ledecky and Emma McKeon. Last year's award was won by tennis star Naomi Osaka.
Pedri is also in the running for breakthrough of the year while three teams (Argentina, Italy and Barcelona Women) are in the running for the team of the year. Only Baskeyball's Milwaukee Bucks come from outside football. Finally, Kick 4 Life is in the running for the Sport for Good award. It is a football club in Lesotho dedicated to social change whose aim is to "transform the lives of young, vulnerable people."
The nominees were selected by a panel of 1300 sports journalists, and the winners will be announced in April following a vote by the 71 Members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
