Lewandowski, FIFA's best male player of 2020, has equalled Muller's 1971/72 record in just 28 league games due to last month's knee injury and squad rotation, six matches fewer than what Muller needed to reach the same amount. The Pole converted a penalty after 26 minutes to equal the league's record.
As part of his celebrations, the Lewandowski lifted his match shirt to reveal a picture of Gerd Mueller over the text "4ever Gerd", after the game had been briefly halted for his Bayern team-mates to make a guard-of-honour on the side of the pitch. Lewandowski can still break Muller's record as Bayern, who were last weekend crowned Bundesliga champions for the ninth straight season, have one match left, at home to Augsburg next Saturday.
The Poland striker, who has scored 47 goals in 39 games in all competitions this season, is set to be crowned the Bundesliga's top-scorer for the sixth time in eight years. His tally of 40 league goals this season includes four hat-tricks and a four-goal haul in Bayern's nervy 4-3 home win against Hertha Berlin last October.
