La Liga season opener sets record with 27 different goalscorers

Kylian Mbappe's penalty not only secured Real Madrid's first victory of the 2025/26 La Liga season but also capped off a record-breaking opening weekend, with 27 different players finding the net – none more than once.

Despite an average of 2.7 goals per game, no player managed to score twice, setting a historic new benchmark for the competition.

The previous record for the most distinct goalscorers on the opening day of a Spanish top-flight season was 24, achieved during the 2019/20 campaign. Six years later, that figure has been surpassed, highlighting the remarkable scoring variety in this season's opening fixtures.

27 scorers across five days

From Friday to Tuesday, fans were treated to goals from established stars and emerging talents alike. The weekend kicked off in Girona, where De Frutos, Alvaro Garcia, Isi Palazon and Joel Roca all scored in Girona's 1-3 defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

Villarreal's 2-0 win over Real Oviedo saw Etta Eyong and Pape Gueye on target, with Salomon Rondon missing a chance to add to the record.

Barcelona's 3-0 victory at Mallorca featured strikes from Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal, while Deportivo Alaves' 2-1 win against Levante produced goals from Toni Martinez, Jeremy Toljan and Tenaglia.

Saturday concluded with Valencia and Real Sociedad both on the scoresheet, thanks to Diego Lopez and Takefusa Kubo.

Sunday continued the scoring spree. Adrian Liso and Uche found the net in Celta's 2-0 win over Getafe. Athletic Club's thrilling 3-2 victory against Sevilla featured goals from Nico Williams, Sannadi, Lukebakio, Agoume and Robert Navarro, while Julian Alvarez, Miguel Rubio and Pere Milla scored for Espanyol in their 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid.

The final goals came on Monday and Tuesday. Aitor Ruibal and German Valera scored in Elche's 1-1 draw with Real Betis, before Mbappe sealed the record with his decisive penalty for Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.

The opening weekend's scoring variety not only set a new benchmark for La Liga but also offered an exciting showcase of the league's depth of attacking talent. From established stars to emerging youngsters, the 2025/26 campaign has begun with a historic flourish.
