"Kompany's Bayern play better than Guardiola's"

The retired footballer Lothar Matthaus assured that Bayern Munich, under the direction of the Belgian Vincent Kompany, "is playing" in this beginning of the season "even better" than when the Spanish coach Pep Guardiola was in charge.

Speaking to the ‘Sky Sport’ website, the historic player said that the new coach "embodies with his style the same as some of his predecessors, who made history at Bayern Munich 20, 30 or 40 years ago", although, he said, "it remains to be seen" if "he will be as successful as Pep was" with the Catalan coach in the dugout.

"Guardiola also had good starts, quick passes and frequent changes of position, but not so clearly. The game goes more forward than outwards or backwards. That's not always possible against a deep defence like Bayer Leverkusen's last Saturday, but you always try to show offensively," Matthaus explained.

The former Ballon d'Or winner said such situations make the game, in his view, "more attractive than you've ever seen at Bayern" and singled out the Bavarians' less impressive players in specific.

"When I see how Kim Min-Jae played on Saturday, I also know why he was the best defender in the Italian league two years ago. Not only the ‘Kanes’ or ‘Musialas’, but also the players in the second step do their job very well. I think they have a lot of fun and there is a good atmosphere in the team," he explained.
