Kiraly retires from internationals

Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly has announced his retirement after 18 years.

The 40-year-old made 107 appearances for the national team and decided to quit, since he is too old.

The Hungarian played for Crystal Palace, Burnley and Fulham.

Kiraly became the oldest player ever at a European Championships in June.

His statement on his website:

"I have 40 years and I can no longer perform at the level that the selection deserves, so I decided to stop.

"I'm a perfectionist and I always gave the maximum. I'm satisfied because I gave all my energy. I came to my limit.

"Bernd Storck gave me the right to decide the way forward after the European Championship. I decided there would not be a more dignified farewell than the European Championships, which triggered a real football fever, a lot of joy caused by the Hungarian people, and once again returned Hungarian football onto Europe's 'big stage'".
