Lahm was a legend for the European giants across his 15-year international career, captaining the side to their World Cup triumph in Brazil four years ago.
Kimmich is considered by many to be his hier, featuring 29 times so far since his debut in 2016 and playing in the side that won the 2017 Confederations Cup.
However, the 23-year-old does not want to be compared to Lahm, insisting he is his own player ahead of this summer's tournament in Russia.
He told reporters: "I don't know why it is but I enjoy the right side with Thomas [Muller]. Philipp Lahm left his stamp as right-back for 15 years and when he retired he was captain of Germany and Bayern Munich.
"I am 23 years old so I cannot match him. I lack the experience and I don't try to copy him. I want to be Joshua Kimmich and not Philipp Lahm 2.0".
Kimmich will be a key part of the squad as Germany look to become the first side to defend the World Cup since 1962 (Brazil).
